The TRINRE Foundation’s mandate is to positively make a difference in people’s lives through education, leadership development and recognition. Its Joy of Reading Programme was launched in 2013 with the goal of encouraging reading as a key skill to learning.
To date, the Joy of Reading Programme has included Children’s Back to School Drive by employees as well as Storytelling Jamborees targeting Children’s Homes across Trinidad and Tobago.
On September 6, 2017 in celebration of International Literacy Day, the TRINRE Foundation presented its flagship Spirit of Leadership Award to Mrs. Amber Gonzales, Founder of Moms for Literacy in recognition of the outstanding work she and her organization are doing to promote education and literacy amongst the nation’s children.
About Moms for Literacy:
Moms for Literacy has been operating for the last 25 years having been established in 1992 when Mrs. Gonzales encouraged two mothers to join her. Since then they embarked upon a Literacy Support Campaign for parents who had difficulty in getting their children to read. Their main goal is to close the gap in the number of children leaving the primary school system unable to read, write and comprehend.
The organization’s Secretariat is based in San Juan and offers advice, support and information to parent, teachers, and students at both the primary and secondary level. One of the unique products of Moms for Literacy is its Literacy Awareness Conferences which are hosted across the country. Since their inception, they have provided support to over 40 schools and 28 communities.
