FIRE PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS
“Think Safe, Be Safe”
Is your home “fire safe”?
Take the time to survey your home for fire safety. A few simple measures may help you to prevent a fire from occurring:
- Keep fire extinguishers in areas where they are most likely needed
- Ensure that family members know how to use the fire extinguishers
- Install Smoke Detectors on every floor of your home
- Make sure that everyone can hear the fire alarms in every room
- Fire alarms should be tested once a month
- Owners should note what maintenance is required. Maintenance usually involves dusting of cobwebs and changing of batteries
- The life of a fire alarm is approximately 10 years
- Consider residential sprinklers
- Matches and Lighters are tools not toys – keep away from children!
- Replace any electrical cord that is cracked or frayed
- Do not overload extension cords or run them under rugs
- Ensure exits are not blocked
- Plan an emergency fire exit with your family – decide on a meeting place outside
What to do if a fire breaks out!
- Secure all family members
- Ensure that all family members are accounted for and led to safety
- Crawl Low under smoke
- If you must exit through smoke crawl low under the smoke as air is cleaner closer to the floor
- Stop, drop and roll
- If your clothes catch a fire, stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll over and over to smother the flames
- Contact Emergency Services
- Promptly contact the fire and police authorities
