FIRE PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS

 “Think Safe, Be Safe”

Is your home “fire safe”?
Take the time to survey your home for fire safety. A few simple measures may help you to prevent a fire from occurring:

  • Keep fire extinguishers in areas where they are most likely needed
  • Ensure that family members know how to use the fire extinguishers
  • Install Smoke Detectors on every floor of your home
    • Make sure that everyone can hear the fire alarms in every room
    • Fire alarms should be tested once a month
    • Owners should note what maintenance is required. Maintenance usually involves dusting of cobwebs and changing of batteries
    • The life of a fire alarm is approximately 10 years
    • Consider residential sprinklers
  • Matches and Lighters are tools not toys – keep away from children!
  • Replace any electrical cord that is cracked or frayed
  • Do not overload extension cords or run them under rugs
  • Ensure exits are not blocked
  • Plan an emergency fire exit with your family – decide on a meeting place outside

What to do if a fire breaks out!

  • Secure all family members
    • Ensure that all family members are accounted for and led to safety
  • Crawl Low under smoke
    • If you must exit through smoke crawl low under the smoke as air is cleaner closer to the floor
  • Stop, drop and roll
    • If your clothes catch a fire, stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll over and over to smother the flames
  • Contact Emergency Services
    • Promptly contact the fire and police authorities
